Saint Angela Friend of Girls

and Patroness for handicapped people, loss of parents and against sickness.

Angela inspired devout women in their vocation.

Quotes:

If according to times and needs you should be obliged to make fresh rules and change current things, do it with prudence and good advice.

Be sincerely kind to every one according to the words of our Lord: “Learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart.” Thus you are imitating God, of whom it is said: “He has disposed all things pleasantly.” And again Jesus said: “My yoke is easy and my burden light.”

~

Angela Merici founded the first teaching congregation of women in the Church and what is now called a “secular institute” of religious women.

As a young woman she became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis (now known as the Secular Franciscan Order), and lived a life of great austerity, wishing, like St. Francis, to own nothing, not even a bed.

At 57, she organized a group of 12 girls to help her in catechetical work. Four years later the group had increased to 28. She formed them into the Company of St. Ursula (patroness of medieval universities and venerated as a leader of women) for the purpose of re-Christianizing family life through solid Christian education of future wives and mothers. The members continued to live at home, had no special habit and took no formal vows, though the early Rule prescribed the practice of virginity, poverty and obedience. The idea of a teaching congregation of women was new and took time to develop. The community thus existed as a “secular institute” until some years after Angela’s death.

God Bless Australia

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair

Our Lady of the Southern Cross

Pray for Us.

I received one of those emails today titled ‘Dog Logic’. Of course it had lots of cute photos and captions but this was my favourite one. I love pups – aren’t they just gorgeous with their wiggling noses!! It makes me want to pick them all up for a cuddle …. one at a time of course. Isn’t God good to us, to give us such adorable creatures to love and enjoy.

I’ve missed the starting date for this Novena but I believe it’s never to late to pray. Our Catholic blogging friends from the US have been posting this on  their blogs and many of you may have received emails from friends urging you to pray.

Here in Victoria legislation has been passed to legalise abortion – the details are horrendous. What happens in each state or country affects us all. We now need to support our brothers & sisters in the US. Many of you have heard or already begun prayers and novenas, but if you haven’t please join in. This is a spiritual battle we’re fighting …. and no matter what the outcome, God has the upper hand.

I have copied some info from Esther’s blog A Catholic Mom In Hawaii …..

If you are opposed to abortion then there is bad news on the horizon.
For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is
set to be signed if Congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The
FOCA is the next sick chapter in the book of abortion. If made a law
then all limitations on abortion will be lifted which will result in
the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals will be required to perform abortions upon request. If this happens Bishops vow to close down all Catholic hospitals,
more than 30% of all hospitals in the United States.

2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.

3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.

4) Parental notification will no longer be required.

5) The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually.

Perhaps most importantly the government will now have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (rape, down syndrome babies, etc.) and could even regulate how many children women are allowed to have.

For all Victorians the passing of similar legislation last year is still fresh in our minds, but we must continue the fight even when it means our prayers are needed overseas. prayers are never wasted – Our Lord puts them All to good use. These horrendous laws affect us all regardless of where we live. I encourage all Catholics and pro-lifers to pray earnestly and fast whenever possible.

We must fight on together in Jesus’ name.
