Pope Benedict XVI message to the young people of the workd for World Youth Day 2008 –
“There is a need for young people who will allow God’s love to burn within them and who will respond generously to his urgent call, just as many young blesseds and saints did in the past and also in more recent times. I assure you that the Spirit of Jesus today is inviting you young people to be bearers of the Good News of Jesus to your comtemporaries.”
Being together with so many of one faith would inspire many to be the bearers of the Good News of Jesus. And now, especially strengthened by the Holy Spirit, many who participated would be able ot say to each other those words we read in Luke 24: 32 on the walk to Emmaus –
“Wasn’t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
We pilgrims could easily say today – “Did not our hearts burn within us while we were in Sydney?”
World Youth day is not only a week of activities and events; it is not only for an experience which comes but once every 2-3 years, but it is ongoing. It is WYD and beyond.
In the scripture, the two who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus urged Jesus to stay with them as it was getting late. This ‘lateness’ however did not stop them from immediately returning to Jerusalem where they told the disciples about Jesus.
It is their example we should now follow.
